When the people saw how long it was taking Moses to come back down the mountain, they gathered around Aaron. “Come on,” they said, “make us some gods who can lead us. We don’t know what happened to this fellow Moses, who brought us here from the land of Egypt.“
Exodus 32:1
Delays: no one likes them… really. In the physical world or in the spiritual world.
A delay in seeing God’s hand at work is problematic, and can cause anxiety and missteps. Losing sight of God, and focusing solely on what we perceive as His “in activity” is spiritually dangerous.
- Some delays are ordained by God, so that He can see if we are ready for the next step in our journey.
- Some delays are distracted by the enemy, so He can cause us to take our focus off our faithful God.
Sometimes we don’t know the difference, but we can be certain of these truths:
- God is always working.
But Jesus replied, “My Father is always working, and so am I.”
John 5:17 NLT - God is always in charge.
Many are the plans in the mind of a man, but it is the purpose of the Lord that will stand.
Proverbs 19:21 ESV - God always has our best interest in mind.
And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.
Romans 8:28 ESV
Delays reveal how much we really trust God.
This text clearly demonstrated the problem with impatience.
When we distrust God in the delay it’s easy to:
- Team up with the wrong people
Reread Exodus 31:1-6 and identify all the references to what the crowd did or said. - Support a new leader that “sees” things your way
Reread Exodus 31:1-6 and identify all the references to what Aaron did in response to what the crowd wanted. - Ignore God’s Instructions
Remember, you must not make any idols of silver or gold to rival me.
Exodus 20:23
As well as the numerous times since the exodus they affirmed that they would obey God. - Become satisfied with the forbidden
The people got up early the next morning to sacrifice burnt offerings and peace offerings. After this, they celebrated with feasting and drinking, and they indulged in pagan revelry.
Exodus 32:6
What’s the deal with Aaron escaping punishment for making the calf?
Live in so close to God that when there is a delay, I view it as time to hang and rest with my Father.
