Scripture:

JEREMIAH 31:15-40, JEREMIAH 49:34-51:14

A New Covenant

“But this is the new covenant, I will make with the people of Israel on that day,” says the LORD.
Jeremiah 31:33a

My Takeaways

Something Old

The new covenant in Jeremiah 31 is a prophetic word about the future. We are benefactors of a new covenant because of Jesus.

But some of these branches from Abraham’s tree—some of the people of Israel—have been broken off. And you Gentiles, who were branches from a wild olive tree, have been grafted in. So now you also receive the blessing God has promised Abraham and his children, sharing in the rich nourishment from the root of God’s special olive tree.
Romans 11:17

In the new covenant God offers

  • Full of freedom, not bondage to a law too difficult to keep
  • Endless grace, mercy and forgiveness, not punishment and captivity.
  • An internal helper, not life without a moral compass
  • Eternal life, not death
  • Permanent protection, not the possibility of falling away

More on the New Covenant

The finished work of the cross, provided a life-giving covenant to me

  • As for me, may I never boast about anything except the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ. Because of that cross, my interest in this world has been crucified, and the world’s interest in me has also died.
    Galatians 6:14
  • Although he was crucified in weakness, he now lives by the power of God. We, too, are weak, just as Christ was, but when we deal with you we will be alive with him and will have God’s power.
    2 Corinthians 13:4

Something New

This is what the LORD of Heaven’s Armies, the God of Israel, says: “When I bring them back from captivity, the people of Judah and its towns will again say, ‘The Lord bless you, O righteous home, O holy mountain!‘”
Jeremiah 31:23

Wow! In the middle of dictating judgment and discipline God offers hope. I love that there is a “when” with God.

Something To Do

Worship and celebrate the finished work of the cross.
