My Takeaways

Something Old

What dominates my thoughts will eventually direct my actions.

  • Amnon was single-minded, obsessed with the wrong thing: Tamar.
  • Absalom was single-minded, obsessed with the wrong thing: Amnon.

Believers should also be single-minded, obsessed with the right thing:

  • Our relationship with God.
  • The study of His Word.
  • Life surrendered to the Holy Spirit.

Obsessed: Strong’s 3334
distressed, straitened in straits, vexed, irritated; annoyed, tossed about as waves.

Obsession
the domination of one’s thoughts or feelings by a persistent idea,

Obsession can:

  • Drive me to be part of something that I never thought possible.
  • Direct me to think things I would never thought of thinking.

This is evidenced in both Amnon and Absalom. AND, this is can be true of anyone who is rightly obsessed with the right things.

  • Our relationship with God.
  • The study of His Word.
  • Life surrendered to the Holy Spirit.

Something New

Absalom named his daughter Tamar.

He had three sons and one daughter. His daughter’s name was Tamar, and she was very beautiful.
2 Samuel 14:27

Something To Do

An excellent, Biblical resource for anyone dealing with the trauma of rape is Hidden Joy in Dark Corner by Wendy Blight.
