Reason For And Purpose Of Defeat

You have rejected us, O God, and broken our defenses. You have been angry with us; now restore us to your favor.
Psalm 60:1

My Takeaways

Something Old

God does allow defeat

  • Every time Israel went out to battle, the LORD fought against them, causing them to be defeated, just as he had warned. And the people were in great distress.
    Judges 2:15

God’s discipline can look like rejection if not see through the eyes of grace.

  • The LORD is compassionate and merciful, slow to get angry and filled with unfailing love.
    Psalm 103:8
  • For the LORD reproves him whom he loves, as a father the son in whom he delights.
    Proverbs 3:12 (ESV)
  • Those whom I love, I reprove and discipline, so be zealous and repent.
    Revelation 3:19 (ESV)

Since defeat/trials are most often experience as a result of disobedience.

Such times should:

  • Teach the Value of Obedience
  • Demonstrate that God knows Best
  • Draw Us Back to Him

For his anger lasts only a moment, but his favor lasts a lifetime!
Weeping may last through the night, but joy comes with the morning.

Psalm 30:5

Something New

What more can I say to you? You know what your servant is really like, Sovereign LORD.
2 Samuel 7:20

What David said is so true! God knows what each of us are really like, the good, bad, and ugly, yet still chooses us.

This trust amazes me!

Something To Do

Receive God’s discipline and correction as an act of love. Repent and return to Him.
