After this, David asked the Lord, “Should I move back to one of the towns of Judah?” “Yes,” the Lord replied. Then David asked, “Which town should I go to?” “To Hebron,” the Lord answered.
2 Samuel 2:1
David made Hebron his capital, and he ruled as king of Judah for seven and a half years.
2 Samuel 2:11
Often one wait leads to another. David still wasn’t where he was supposed to be, king of all of Israel, but his relationship with God was renewed.
Since David just came out of a period of spiritual decline, God could have put him on “probation” and refused to speak to him for a while. Instead, the LORD spoke to David and gave him guidance.
This anointing couldn’t come when David still lived among the Philistines, virtually as a Philistine. He had to get things right in his own walk before this fresh anointing.
Don’t you love that God doesn’t put us on Spiritual probation for our periods of spiritual decline.
David also suggested that he perhaps needed a fresh anointing… a re-dedication of sorts after his year and four months living among the Philistines.
