Scripture:

JUDGES 7:1-9:21

Never Throw In The Towel

Gideon then crossed the Jordan River with his 300 men, and though exhausted, they continued to chase the enemy.
Judges 8:4

My Takeaways

Something Old

Don’t we want to just throw in the towel sometimes. Why didn’t Gideon say to his troops, “Guys, we are tired, hungry, and getting no support. Let’s just circle back home and call it a day.”

The enemy won’t stop, and neither can we.

  • Even if it’s late:
That night the LORD said, Get up! Go down into the Midianite camp, for I have given you victory over them!
    Judges 7:9
  • Even if I’m tired.
Gideon then crossed the Jordan River with his 300 men, and though exhausted, they continued to chase the enemy.
    Judges 8:4
  • Even if I’m hungry.
When they reached Succoth, Gideon asked the leaders of the town, “Please give my warriors some food. They are very tired. I am chasing Zebah and Zalmunna, the kings of Midian.
    Judges 8:5

Battle Principles and Power

  • Some trust in chariots, and some in horses; but we will remember the name of the LORD our God.
    Psalm 20:7 (NKJV)
  • Not by might nor by power, but by My Spirit,’ says the LORD of hosts.
    Zechariah 4:6b (NKJV)
  • Blessed is the man who remains steadfast under trial, for when he has stood the test he will receive the crown of life, which God has promised to those who love him. Let no one say when he is tempted, “I am being tempted by God,” for God cannot be tempted with evil, and he himself tempts no one. But each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire.
    James 1:12-14 (ESV)
  • No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.
    Romans 8:37 (ESV)
  • But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore, I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me. For the sake of Christ, then, I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities. For when I am weak, then I am strong.
    2 Corinthians 12:9-10 (ESV)
  • Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might.
    Ephesians 6:10 (ESV)
  • Therefore, take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm.
    Ephesians 6:13 (ESV)
  • For everyone who has been born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world—our faith.
    1 John 5:4 (ESV)

Something New

Spurgeon on Gideon’s ephod; a good word to us all.

“He did not set up an idol, but he made an ephod, an imitation of that wonderful vestment worn by the high priest. Perhaps he made it of solid gold, not to be worn, but to he looked at, simply to remind the people of the worship of God, and not to be itself worshiped. But ah, dear friends, you see here that, if we go half an inch beyond what God’s Word warrants we always get into mischief!” –  Charles Spurgeon

Something To Do

Keep fighting, even if I am weak. I’m never fighting alone, and I always win.
